  9.  AB    OBJECTIVE: To evaluated the thiroidal abnormalities that appeared during
  10.        HIV infection. METHODS: Measurement of thiroid hormones (T3, T4, T4L,
  11.        TSH) by ELISA in 86 patients (67 male) stratified in three groups
  12.        according to their CD4 cells count. RESULTS: Group I (CD4 > 500):
  13.        Fourteen males and 8 females. Mean hormonal values are normal except an
  14.        increased value of T3 in females. Group II (CD4 500-200): Nineteen males
  15.        and 8 females. All mean values are descended except an increased value
  16.        of T3 in males. Group III (CD4 < 200): Thirty-four males and 3 females.
  17.        All values are decreased. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS: T3 presents an
  18.        initial elevation with a posterior decrease in the patients more
  19.        inmunosuppressed. T4, T4L and TSH do not presents alterations during the
  20.        HIV infection. Knowledge of thiroid fonction is important for a better
  21.        understanding of wasting syndrome in HIV patients.
